Dr. Jacob Varkey
Howard Hughes Medical Institute Supported Programs
There are currently three ways in which students can participate in programs supported by HHMI at Humboldt State University.
-
Summer Science Program For High School Juniors At Humboldt State University (HHMI-SSP): A program for high school students who are interested in finding out more about science! This program is for High School students who will be entering juniors in the Fall of 2008 with an interest in science. Ten to fifteen students will be selected to participate and will receive a $250 stipend for participating in this four-week series of workshops. Participants attend three different workshops throughout the duration of the program; Biology, Chemistry, and a combined Math/English workshop. Students will get hands-on training in molecular biology and chemistry, and will even get to isolate, analyze and clone DNA in an HSU biotechnology lab!! Each day begins at 11am and ends at 3pm, with a break for lunch. This year's program will begin on July 7 and run through August 1, 2008.
On campus housing isn't available for this program. However, students who must commute over 5 miles to HSU will be reimbursed.
If you are interested in participating in this program, complete the application. Attach a personal statement, of at least two paragraphs and no more than one single-spaced page, describing your academic goals up to this point in your life and why you feel you would benefit from these workshops. Also, include an official copy of your High School Transcripts. Due to the limited amount of space, please send your completed application package on or before the priority postmark deadline of Saturday, April 12, 2008. The final deadline for submission is Saturday, May 31, 2008.
Please send completed applications to:

Department of Biological Sciences
Humboldt State University
Arcata, CA 95521
Please feel free to contact us by either phone 707.826.4164 or email at jpv1@humboldt.edu if you have any questions about the program. It is important that you complete all sections of the application and the personal statement, as incomplete applications will not be processed. - Summer High School Research Program for High School Seniors at Humboldt State University: For high school students who have participated in HHMI-SSP and will be entering seniors in the Fall of 2008, there is an opportunity to conduct research over the summer at HSU. For 8 weeks, participating students will be paired with an undergraduate mentor and will be supervised by faculty while they conduct research in the biological sciences. Five students will be selected to participate and will receive a $1000 scholarship. Participants must prepare a presentation of their research results and may have an opportunity to travel to and present at regional/national conferences.
