Appropedia Solar Distillation

Cordyceps and the Carpenter Ant

Intro:

I am a second semester freshman at HSU for the Spring 2012 semester. I am eighteen and I am not currently listed as an ERE major, but I am interested in learning more about this major and deciding whether or not to become a part of it. I like math and science, and Environmental Resources Engineering is the science of the future that is going to be helpful to everyone one day and be really important. It is obvious that we, humans, have limited resources and unlimited demands Sustainability is important and the most appealing aspects of this study, to me, is solar power and the different methods we use to harness the energy of the sun. I am also concerned about potable water resources and the use of solar power to distill polluted water for drinking which is why I included the Appropedia link about different methods currently being studied to use solar power to distill water. I am still just scratching thesurface of this major and hope that I can help save the world one day.

One topic that I have been intrigued by since I have been here at HSU is mycology. I never knew what a huge impact mushrooms have on our planet and I was stoked to learn about cordycep mushrooms which are mushrooms that enter the minds of different insects and force them to commit suicide. I included a link to a video about cordyceps that document the process and seems to be more science fiction than fact.
