Note that nucleic acid sequencing is introduced in Voet, Voet & Pratt, pp 56-64.
Discussion Topic I: The Human Chromosome 20 Sequence. Read the news and views summary by Hattori and Taylor and the article by Deloukas et. al. on the sequence of chromosome 20 in Nature (20/27 December 2001). In addition, review the "News and Views" articles in Nature on the human genome project from last week (pp 814-823)* You may also want to look at the other articles, and the genome map in Nature, or the map generated by Celera Genomics reported essentially simultaneously in Science (vol 291, 16 February 2001), and their associated articles, analysis etc.
- How does the complete sequence compare to the draft sequence of last year?
- What is the meaning of "complete sequence" in this case?
- What methods of analysis have the authors performed on their sequence?
- What new approaches have the authors introduced and why?
- How does the effort required to "finish" compare to creating the draft?
- What's involved?
