Wildlife 570 – Advanced Animal Energetics

Course Description:

This course examines the sources and utilization of energy and water by terrestrial vertebrates. Energy and water in the environment are examined as they relate to animal physiology and habitat ecology. Laboratories stress objective assessments and methodologies for measurement of the physical environment that affects energy and water for wildlife (data loggers, temperature measurement, and metabolic rate). Weekly discussions review the literature. 4 units. Field Trip required.

Prerequisites:

Wildlife techniques or an environmental sampling course.

Principals of Wildlife Management or a general ecology course.

Principals of Biology

Required Text:

Assigned readings from the literature
Course requirements: Field trip, project paper, readings, homework assignments or laboratory write-ups. Testing includes two midterms and one final. Lecture, discussion, and laboratory material are integrated into exams.
