A note to Prospective Graduate Students

If you are interested in working with me on a Master of Science degree at Humboldt State University, please send me a letter indicating your research interests and specifically why you are interested in attending Humboldt State University. Please include a resume, a list of science courses completed to date, your grades, and references (please include phone numbers of references and assume that I may contact them). I may also request that you send me a 2-3 page prospectus for a potential Masters project. Ideas that you have outlined in your prospectus may differ considerable from what finally becomes your thesis project.

You are strongly encouraged to review the current activities of my research group and thesis titles of past students. Because of the character of our research efforts, graduate studies usually require logistics that can only be supported with grant resources. Although not always the case, I am very reluctant to accept a student to work in these areas unless we have already secured funding or resources. If you are invited to join our research group, I may have already secured resources and study design for project purposes; however, the student may be expected to develop their thesis topic within the framework of the larger research question and develop their own thesis proposal to implement that thesis plan.
