Our laboratory focuses on investigating the microbial diversity and ecology of high temperature, acidic geothermal features at Lassen Volcanic National Park (LVNP). In collaboration with the laboratories of Dr. Gordon Wolfe at California State University, Chico, and Dr. Ken Stedman at Portland State University, we have an NSF-funded Microbial Observatory Project to investigate the microbial ecology of the largest hot spring in North America - (Boiling Springs Lake) in Lassen Volcanic National Park.
Since 1999, our laboratory has provided research opportunities and training for numerous undergraduate students, many of whom have since successfully completed advanced degrees. This project has also been integrated into coursework at all three contributing universities to broaden student exposure to research methods and practice. We also offer opportunities for pursuing a Master's degree in the Dept. of Biological Sciences at Humboldt State University.
