HSU students will work with St. Mary’s School (K-8) students in any number of capacities: tutoring, teaching art or drama, making gift or care packages for the needy in our community, etc. Ethical (philosophical) principles that underlie and motivate such service will also be identified.
Dear Students,
My name is Mary I. Bockover and I am the instructional liaison for this 1 unit course which offers HSU students valuable service and experiential learning opportunities with St. Mary's Elementary School, a parochial school (K-8) here in Arcata. Understand that this is a self-directed service learning course so you will be responsible for contacting the principal, Jim Monge, at the number above. You will have to tell him what your interests are so that your volunteer time is coordinated with the needs of the school. You will also have to inform him about the days and times that you would be available to meet your minimum of 12 volunteer hours. Think about what you may like to do: for example, do you have a knack for tutoring Math, English, or Reading? Would you help out in Athletics or Art? Are you willing to help out with supervising students during lunch (called “lunch duty”) or on the playground? Do you prefer a certain grade level, or are you willing to help out in the classroom in general? Please know that having your specific interests met is not guaranteed, since the needs of the school will be the main factor that determine which volunteer activities that end up being available. Email this information to me anyway, and I can give the school a “heads up” that you will be calling. I will also forward them the information you send me, in the effort to match you with the situation that would suit you best. I will forward this to the school so I have it in my records, but it will be up to you to follow through with making arrangements to meet the principal and teacher you will be working with yourself. Contact information is above.
