HSU ETHICS FORUM

Created by Mary I. Bockover

PRIVACY, SAFETY, AND GLOBALIZATION

This ethics forum was created so HSU students, and other members of the university and community, can discuss key ethical issues in an academic context.  It also provides Humboldt State University with a new way to educate in an impartial, critical, and informed matter, advancing its mission and charter.  A video and/or collection of all ethics fora are kept as reference material.

This course also fulfills the Practical Learning Requirement for the Asian Philosophy and Moral Controversies courses that I offer on a regular basis.

REQUIREMENTS FOR RECEIVING 1 CREDIT (credit or no credit):

FIRST FORUM: Tuesday, March 4th, 2008, at 7:00 – 8:30pm, in FH 125

SECOND FORUM: Tuesday, March 11th, 2008, at 7:00 – 8:30pm, in FH 125

A panel discussion will examine the moral controversy and/or conflict between privacy and safety in a way that expresses a range of perspectives of the issue.  The panelists will give their presentations on this moral controversy during the first forum, and will also give a general introduction to frame the topic during the second forum so that audience and community participation can begin, mainly in the form of brief questions and comments from the audience and then responses from the panelists.

Read approximately 5 hours of material that pertains to the moral controversy at hand.  Some reading material will be available in the philosophy department office (see the HSU Ethics Forum binder), the rest is self-directed and/or recommended by the panelists.  References will be given throughout the semester.

Spend approximately 5 hours viewing media – movies, documentaries, and Internet sources, etc. that pertain to the ethical issue at hand.  This activity is also self-directed, although suggestions will be made throughout the semester on this too.

Write a paper, approximately 5 pages in length (double-spaced) and typed, that analyses the issue raised in this forum.

SEE FLYER on this semester’s forum for listing of panelists

All work must be handed in by the end of finals week
