Description
The web-based map above was made in TileMill and is called Slippy map. A Slippy map is a map that gives a smooth zoom scope and ability to move map around without leaving the web browser. The data used above comes from the USGS’s database on earthquakes around the world from the past seven days. The TileMill map uses CartoCSS to style and create elements on the map, which is a specific scripting language for programs like TileMill or Mapbox to construct the Slippy map. This is the first web-based map I have constructed and displayed on the Internet. The code used for this map was basic and mostly taken from the professor but gave understanding of how to put code together to receive a final project. These types of maps are very useful and fun for viewers to have an interactive experience. This specific map could be placed on a website dedicated to tracking earthquakes.
