I grew up learning Japanese Obon dancing in the Japanese community in Salt Lake City, Utah in the 1960's, 70's and 80's. I have recently begun a study of the history of Obon in the United States as well as its ongoing growth and evolution as a living folk tradition.
I have taught these dances at various festivals in California including Mendocino Folklore Camp and celebrations on the campus of Humboldt State University.
I will be teaching a class in Obon dances at Mendocino Folklore Camp in July of 2014.
On occasion, I teach some of these dances through the Humboldt Folk Dancers. Go to www.humboldtfolkdancers.org for a regular schedule.
