Chip Kidd was born in Pennsylvania in September in the year 1964. Every since his childhood, comic books captured Kidd's imagination. Kidd attened Penn State and earned a degree in graphic design. One of his professors became the inspiration behind some of Kidd's own novels. For example, in Kidd's novel The Cheese Monkeys, a book that attempted to show the less glamorous side to becoming a graphic designer from a student's perspective. After graduating in 1986, Kidd moved to New York City and was hired as a junior assistant in the art department at Alfred A. Knopf. To this day he has remained there and has created dozens of covers each year.
Part of the allure of being a book cover designer is the oppruntunity to work with famous writers and help shape the impact of a book. A cover design can make the difference between a book being bought or set back down. When Kidd started working at Knopf, authors paid attention to his designs. This landed him jobs with authors such as Bret Easton Ellis, Haruki Murakami, Dean Koontz, Cormac McCarthy, David Sedaris and Donna Tartt. His cover designs are in high demand.
