INTERNET NEWSGROUPS AND/OR MAIL/DISCUSSION GROUPS:

Click on the hot link 'Liszt of Newsgroups'
Search for mail/discussion groups by clicking the button at top
of page labelled 'lists' or Search for newsgroups on the
opening page
For Mail/Discussion Groups:
Copy the list's email address and any information that Lizst
or another source of addresses has supplied.
In your email program, e.g. Pine, Eudora, Procomm, etc. type
the subscribing address on the To: line. Be sure NOT to use the
address designated to communication with all of the members of
the list. Use only the address that begins with something like
'listserv@the list's address' or 'majordomo@the list's address'
or 'mailbase@the list's address' so your request to subscribe is
sent to the computer program in charge of subscriptions and not
to all of the members of the list. 10,000 people may subscribe
to the list. They don't like to see your subscription request.
Type the subscribing address on the To: line and on the
first line of the body of the email type "subscribe 'name of
list' 'your name'. That is all that you need. A computer
program will read your request and subscribe you and send you an
email confirming the fact.
For Newsgroups: (Don't not type apostrophes indicated below -
just type the characters between them)
To configure Pine to receive Newsgroups:
1 Enter QVTnet, type 'axe' to enter the axe computer,
type your log-on address and password,
type 'pine' and then .
2 In Pine's menu type 'S' for SETUP.
3 Type 'C' for Configure
4 With the cursor keys highlight fourth line from the top
labelled 'nntp-server'
5 Type 'A' for Add Value to the configuration list
6 Type 'news.csu.net', then touch
7 Type 'E' for Exit from the configuration list
8 Type 'Q' and exit from Pine since the change in the
configuration table is effective only on entering Pine.
To Find, Select, and Subscribe or Unsubscribe to newsgroups:
1 In Pines's menu type 'L' for FOLDER LIST
2 You will now see a top and a bottom portion of the
screen. The bottom part is new since you configured your Pine
account and it is entitled 'News-collection '.
3 With the down cursor key highlight this bottom portion
and touch .
4 To subscribe type 'A' for Subscribe.
5 Type a keyword for the newsgroup type in which you are
interested, such as prozac or neuroscience or psychology.
6 Hold the control (Ctrl) key down while you type 'X' so
the system will return to you only the newsgroups that correspond
to your keywords. This can be a very slow process so don't
assume that the system has locked up too quickly. Be patient.
If no newsgroups are found that include your spelling of the
keyword, type 'E' for exit and try again. This is also slow so
be patient.
7 Highlight the first newsgroup to which you wish to
subscribe and type 'S' for subscribe. Touch to accept
the newsgroup that the system proposes. Repeat as often you
wish.
8 To unsubscribe highlight the newsgroup you wish to
delete and type 'D' to delete the doomed group. Respond by 'Y'
if you are sure that you want to delete this group, 'N' if you
made a mistake.
To view (lurk) and participate in the discussion on the
newsgroups to which you have subscribed:
1 Highlight the newsgroup with which you wish to
interact.
2 Tough and follow the commands at the bottom of
the screen. Remember that if you send a message to the
newsgroup, 10,000 people may read your thoughts. Make sure that
the content is significant and will represent you, the Psychology
Department and HSU well. As to the format be sure that the
English grammar, spelling, punctuation, etc. is correct.
