Rate of speaking

Remember that listening well is hard; be a good tour guide: don't speak too quickly and give your audience chances to catch up by pausing between main ideas.

Too many students rush; if you have a tendency to, give yourself a note on your speaking outline to "slow down."
If your speech is too long, you can edit or speak more rapidly--which is always the wrong choice! Edit your speech.

! =	SUPERIOR	You had an especially effective rate that was relaxed and helped us follow along.
+ =	EFFECTIVE	You did not speak too quickly.
+ =	PROBLEMATIC	Overall, your rate was too fast-the speech was rushed making it difficult to absorb all your ideas.
– =	DETRIMENTAL	Whoa! Slow down! You are in danger of getting a speeding ticket: you made it very difficult for your audience to follow along.
