Attention and interest

Speeches that start strong are geared for overall success. A weak opening can be overcome if you really rally your enthusiasm before the body of the speech.

Appear confident and friendly; smile!
Wait for noise to abate.
Don't show (or tell) your nervousness.
Have eye contact for your first statements to your audience.
Put your best material first; "hook" the audience with your first sentence!

+ =	PROBLEMATIC	You should use a more attention-getting opening to your introduction. Anecdotes, imagery, and rhetorical questions work well. “Hello my name is...” does not.
– =	DETRIMENTAL	There were serious problems with the opening moments of your speech.
