Gettysburg Monuments: A Picture Album Gettysburg Military Park impresses the present day visitor with its long manicured avenues, woods, and fields lined with stone and bronze statuary, punctuated by explanatory texts cast in iron and bronze. It feels like a most unusual three-dimensional book on a grand scale. As one walks from monument to monument, from hilltop, to field, to woods, the narrative of the three-day battle unfolds, with the texts and statuary illustrating the details of the story in the very places each event occurred. Gettysburg Monuments: A Picture Album is an unpublished book of seventy of the most evocative commemorative monuments of the Civil War battlefield. I carefully considered season, time of day, and light, in my desire to animate the sculptural forms, breathe life into the still figures, and dramatize the emotional intent of the individual memorials and the elegiac quality of the military park.
