Learner Outcomes

This course addresses the following Learner Outcomes from the Mathematics Department:

This course is also an Area B GE Math & Quantitative Reasoning course and therefore upon completion students will:

Grading

Letter grades will be assigned according to the total percentage earned in the class.

Exams and Quizzes

There will be two Midterms and a Final. The final will be focused on the last third of the course, but may contain material from the first part of the course. You will be allowed to use calculators on all exams. Quizzes will be given on most Fridays.

There will be no make-up exams or quizzes. If you miss a midterm for a valid, documented reason, such as a serious illness or family emergency, email or see me as soon as possible to discuss an alternate grade scheme.

Gateway Exam

There will be a gateway exam to test your basic differentiation skills without the use of a calculator. You must get 80% or better on the gateway exam to pass the course. However there will be opportunities to retake the gateway outside of class. The gateway is worth 5% of your grade, but everyone will get at least 4 of those percentage points. If you have to retake the gateway you will only get those 4 percentage points.

Homework

There will be weekly Homework assignments that are collected on Fridays in class. I encourage you to work in groups on homework so that you can learn from each other. However, working together does not include copying each others work.

Late homework will not be accepted, but you can make arrangements with me to turn it in early if you have to miss class. You will turn in the regular even-numbered assigned homework problems on Fridays. Odd-numbered Journal Exercises should be worked in a separate "journal" and will be turned in on exam days. Journals exercises can be your first draft, but weekly assignments should neat and well organized.
