Little Jones Creek Cutthroat Trout
These fish have been the subject of a variety of field studies by Redwood Sciences Lab aquatic biologists and other scientists, including Dr. Charles Gowan of Randolph-Macon College. Physical and biological monitoring within the watershed has also provided the basis for much of the work on spatially explicit, individual-based models conducted by lab members, Dr. Steve Railsback and others.

Field Experiments in Jacoby Creek
A nearby creek in the Arcata City Forest has provided study sites for several experiments on the effects of stream habitat characteristics on key processes affecting fish populations. The photo at right depicts a small-scale manipulation of streamflow.

Laboratory Experiments
Laboratory stream research has included experiments on the influence of turbidity on salmonid feeding efficiency and on the effects of multiple predators on stream fishes.

Invasive Species Research
Redwood Sciences Lab research on invasive fishes has included field experiments on the effect of invasive fishes on predation risk for native taxa (at right), and more recently genetic analyses of population bottlenecks and heterogeneity in introduced populations.
