Course Content (Objectives):
Fundamentals of Instructor Training:
- Describe factors that enhance learning.
- Identify instructor functions.
- Describe teaching methods common to American Red Cross courses.
- Describe rationale for evaluation in ARC courses.
- Explain the need for accurate, timely reporting and record keeping.
- Describe steps in planning to teach.
- Explain the importance of representing ARC effectively.
Water Safety Instructor
- Apply information and knowledge from Fundamentals of Instructor Training course to Water Safety Instructor course.
- Demonstrate ability to plan, conduct and evaluate courses
in swimming and water safety.
- Provide for the participant’s health and safety.
- Become familiar with all texts used in swimming and water safety courses.
- Conduct practice teaching with emphasis on the various educational
methods and approaches applicable to swimming and water safety
instruction.
- Evaluate participant’s performance and provide corrective feedback and encouragement.
- Answer participant’s questions appropriately.
- Explain ARC procedures and policies related to water safety courses.
- Be able to maintain complete and accurate records and reports.
- Be able to perform the required skills at an acceptable level of performance.

- Practice teaching assignments (5 or 6 minimum)
Course Grade:
- Attendance is required. If you know you are going to have to
miss a class, you MUST see me before that date.
- To achieve ARC certification as a Water Safety Instructor,
you must complete all work assigned, score 80 percent or better
on all written tests, and satisfactorily complete any additional ARC
certification requirements.
- Make-ups for classes missed are at the convenience and discretion
of the instructor.

Study Guide: 100 points
5 Lesson plans: 60 points each (300)
5 Practice teaching assignments: 50 points each (200)
Final Exam: 100 points

Class is finished at 11:45 A.M.
All students must have a swimming suit (no cut-offs or bikinis)
Students must provide their own towels.
Repeated entry and exit from the water is expected.
