KINS 311 – FUNDAMENTALS OF AQUATICS
COURSE OBJECTIVES
- To learn and be able to perform with proficiency the following swimming strokes:
freestyle, backstroke, breaststroke, butterfly, sidestroke, and elementary backstroke.
- To learn and be able to perform a dive.
- To learn and be able to perform with proficiency an open turn, flip turn, and backstroke turn.
- To become familiar with aquatic sports such as:
water polo, inner tube water polo and triathlons.
- To participate in and learn the principles and benefits of water aerobics.
- Understand the benefits of swimming fitness.
- Review the various swimming agencies and organizations.
- Become proficient with all aspects of water safety.
- Become competent in assessing swimming techniques.
- Use video as an instructional tool during assessments.
- Research a swimming game and share it with the class.
- Become confident, comfortable, and capable of teaching aquatics to others.
- Produce a comprehensive notebook that will assist you in teaching an aquatic class at any level.
- Become familiar with the running of a pool, to include:
water chemistry, staffing, and safety considerations
- To create a lesson plan for teaching a swimming course.

REQUIREMENTS
- Attendance is mandatory.
Two absences are allowed as long as the student is responsible for handouts from missed classes,
either from a classmate or me.
- More than 2 absences will result in a 1/3 letter grade drop.
- A COMPREHENSIVE notebook is due on Friday, Dec. 13, by noon.

- All students will come to each class with all essentials to swim immediately
following lecture.
- Students are to research an aquatic game, summarize it, and reproduce
copies for entire class.
- Required text: Swimming and Diving, American Red Cross.
Available from Adrienne or the Red Cross in Eureka.
EVALUATION
- Students will receive a letter grade based on the following:
Completed Notebook: 25 points
Lesson Plan: 75 points
Participation/Improvement: 75 points
Game: 25 points
Final Exam: 100 points
- Letter grades will be reduced by 1/3 grade for every absence over 3.
- Total accumulated points will be graded as follows:
280 – 300: A
270 – 279: A-
260 – 269 B+
250 – 259: B
240 – 249: B-
230 – 239: C+
220 – 229: C
210 – 219: C-
200 – 209: D+
190 – 199: D
180 – 189: D-
179 below: F
